Foo dogs are actually lions & are meant to be placed in pairs. They are symbolic, protective statues, and are designed in pairs — one is female, the other is male. The female represents yin and symbolically protects the people dwelling inside the home, while the male statue, representing Yang, protects the structure itself.
Versions of the foo dog have been used in homes in China as symbolically protective decor for hundreds of years.
