India is home to 1180 species of birds, a huge number! Our incredible nation nests so many birds along with us in it. Birds have had a huge influence on Indian culture, especially in Rajasthan. Poems of beauty, sadness, strength and life have been influenced by different types of birds. The royal families in Rajasthan in early times used to hunt, capture birds and also go bird watching. It was one of their hobbies, something that they took pride in. Bird hunting was also seen as a competitive activity. A king or prince was known for his strength through bird and animal hunting. We all know of bird hunting as one of the hobbies of the royals in Rajasthan, but painting was also preferred as a hobby among men and women. There are a number of birds found in India, very rare beautiful birds. Paintings of rare birds were hung on the walls of royal palaces as a matter of pride. It was more than mere décor. Women also saw the sensitive and creative side of men which was rare since most men were seen as hard-hearted macho men. Birds have such an impact on Rajasthan’s culture that even the folk music has been themed around birds like Kurjan(Demoiselle crane), parakeets, Indian peafowl, etc for ages now. Ancient literature of Rajasthan mentions many beautiful birds like the kurjan and the peacock in context of hunting, weather and climate forecasting. Kurjan is known as the migratory birds of the western states, and peacock as an indicator of rainfall. Even myths and legends were made about birds. Now bird photography is prevalent, people especially go on bird watching expeditions. It all started with the royal families and we’re glad such creatures exist for us to awe upon.
